About

THE QUEER THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE ARTISTS’ DATABASE

SEARCH
ARTISTS BY NAME / DISCIPLINE KEYWORD

This initiative began as a response to some patterns of misrepresentative and exploitative practices from directors, companies, organizations that use queerness as a marketing tool for their projects without making an effort to queer their spaces and processes by taking steps such as:

1. Hiring queer actors to play queer characters
2. Employing queer directors/ADs/producers
3. Mounting work written by queer CREATORS

As a productive tool to counter this trend, the intention with this database is to provide of list of Canadian-based artists that can be shared with artistic directors of theatre companies / curators / programmers / anyone who holds power within the performance industry when they decide to create a "queer" show in order to work towards authentic representation.

We operate with a working definition of queer as being a practice in addition to an identity.
QTPAD seeks to create a sense of community for arts workers who identify as any part(s) of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. Our definition of queer also includes the practice of confronting and dismantling oppressive systems of heteronormativity, patriarchy, sexism, racism, and ablism in the performance arts.
